What goes into building a slab foundation in Kearney?
Slab foundation building in Kearney means pouring the concrete floor a slab-on-grade house rests on, set right on the ground, and we plan the base, the drainage and everything that goes under it before the pour.
Most people call us once the house plans are drawn and the builder wants a pour date. The price mostly follows the size of the slab, how much the lot slopes, how much dirt has to come out and get packed back as base, and what has to go under the slab before we pour. The schedule turns on your builder's plumbing and piping, the weather and when the ground is ready, and after I measure, I put your figure in a written estimate.
How do you know your lot needs work before the slab goes in?
Water sits where the house goes
If rain pools on the pad, the ground is draining toward your house site instead of away from it. Pour on that and you get a damp slab that settles, so we fix the grade first, while it's still just dirt and cheap to move.
Soft dirt or old fill
Ground that gives underfoot or was filled in years back usually hasn't finished settling. A slab poured on it settles right along with it, so that dirt gets dug out and packed before anything else happens.
No plan for what goes under
If nobody has said where the plumbing, the radon vent pipe and any vapor barrier go, the slab isn't ready to pour. After the pour, changing any of it takes a saw and a jackhammer, which is a hard way to fix a floor.
How we build a slab foundation
A house slab has a lot planned into it before the pour, from the radon vent piping to when the joints get sawed, so I go over all of it with you and your builder ahead of time. Then we dig out the subgrade, the dirt the slab sits on, and pack it instead of raking it level, because a raked base settles with the dirt and takes the slab with it. We check where the water runs so the grade falls away from the house, set the forms and lay rebar, the steel that keeps cracks from pulling apart, then plan the pour around the heat of the day, since midday sun leaves a weak, dusty top. After we finish it, we saw the control joints and let it cure, the wait while concrete gains its strength, before anybody puts weight on it.
Some houses need more than a slab. If your plans call for a basement or crawl space, that's our foundation installation work, and for a shop or business lot, concrete parking lot building puts the same packed base under a much bigger pour.
Standard slab on a packed base
This suits most flat lots, houses and outbuildings, because the base is dug out, packed and graded so the slab sits on ground that's done settling. It's the plain, proven way, and how much base work your lot needs is usually what moves the price.
Frost protected shallow foundation
One builder's guide says this method suits slab homes on lots with moderate to low slopes, and on a fitting lot the slab goes in with one placement of concrete, which speeds construction. Rigid foam around the foundation keeps the soil under the house warm so the digging can stay shallow, and it's an option your builder reviews with the city before anyone counts on it.

What happens after you call about a slab foundation in Kearney?
Here's how a slab job runs from your first call to the walk-through, and who does what along the way.
Call or send a request
Call (308) 371-8187 or use the form and tell me a little about the lot and the house going on it. We'll pick a time for me to come out.
I measure and write it up
I look at the site, measure and ask how you'll use the house, then put the estimate in writing. You'll know where the money goes before you decide anything.
Set a date around weather
Once you're ready we set a date that suits the job and the weather. We line it up with your builder so the pipes are in the ground before the trucks are on the street.
Prep, pour and walk-through
We prep, pour, finish and clean up. Before we leave I walk you through caring for the new concrete while it cures.
Why Kearney homeowners call Advanced Kearney Concrete for slab foundations
The owner measures and pours
I come out to look at your lot, measure and write the estimate, then work alongside our crew on the job itself. The person who planned your slab is the one standing in it when it goes in.
In business since 2021
I started this business in 2021 after years on other people's concrete crews. That's where I learned what a cheap base costs a homeowner a few years later.
Licensed, insured and easy to check
We're licensed and insured, and Nebraska requires contractors to register with the Nebraska Department of Labor. Registration doesn't vouch for anyone's workmanship, so ask any crew you're considering about their past slab work too.
The base is the part nobody sees once it's poured, and it's the last place I'd cut to save money. Tell me about your lot and I'll come take a look.
Slab foundations and site work in Kearney
Kearney's Building Services division enforces the building codes the city has adopted, including the residential code for houses, and inspects work against them. Building contractors register with the division before starting work, and code questions go to the Building Official at (308) 233-3236. Before work starts we check with that office on what your slab needs, then take care of the paperwork when it falls to us or walk you through it when it falls to you.
Soils in Buffalo County change over short distances and some land floods from time to time, so the soil at your exact spot is worth looking up, and we dig out anything soft no matter how firm the top looks. We look just as hard at the dirt and the drainage on jobs in Lexington and Holdrege.
Questions about slab foundations in Kearney
How much does a concrete slab foundation cost in Nebraska?
A concrete slab in Nebraska usually costs about $6 to $11 per square foot, and that's a statewide figure for slab work, not a quote for your lot. Where yours lands depends on the size, the slope and how much base work and under-slab planning it needs. I'll come out, measure and put your number in a written estimate.
Does a new slab home in Nebraska need a radon system?
Yes, unless it falls under one of the exceptions the law lists, because Nebraska law requires new homes built for regular occupancy to resist radon. On a slab house that means a passive radon system, vent piping under the slab that lets soil gas out, put in during construction, so it has to be planned before the pour. A sump pit open to the soil gets a sealed lid, or a lid with a trapped inlet if it doubles as a floor drain.
Can you pour a slab foundation in cold weather in Kearney?
It can be done, but cold weather guidance calls for pouring only on ground that isn't frozen, with no freezing temperatures expected within 48 hours. A cold forecast can move the pour date, so leave some room in the build schedule. We'd rather wait a few days than set the floor you'll live on for decades onto frozen dirt.
Do I need a vapor barrier under a concrete slab?
A vapor barrier is worth weighing if you're planning moisture-sensitive flooring, because one concrete supplier's report says it cuts failures of flooring, adhesives and coatings that don't handle moisture. The same report ties vapor barriers to curling and cracking, so it's a trade-off to settle with your builder before the pour. Tell me your flooring plans at the estimate and we'll talk it through.
What causes cracks in a new concrete slab?
Concrete shrinks as it dries and it's going to crack somewhere, so the control joints, usually sawed, give those cracks a planned place to form. Joint-cutting guidance puts the timing usually within hours of the pour, depending on temperature and the mix, so it's fair to ask any crew when they plan to saw. The other kind of crack comes from a slab settling, and that one starts with the base.
How do I get a slab foundation estimate in Kearney?
Call (308) 371-8187, send a request through the form or email service@concretekearney.com, and I'll come out to measure and write it up. It helps to have the lot address, a rough idea of how much it slopes, the flooring you're planning and your target start date ready. Those four things shape most of the plan.
